My new indie horror game devlog #5
The past few weeks the development of my new horror game is really coming along. I have added a lot more to the environment and even created a dynamic world of sorts. No location will be the same after visiting it twice. If you even know how to find your way back that is. Right now I am experimenting with a monster NPC that chases the player around the map. I still haven't decided what the "monster" will be but it will certainly be a humanoid type of character.
The Environment
The base map is now finished, all initial locations are created in the game. It amazes me how much time this actually takes. It took a long time to really create something that looks good and isn't just more of the same over and over again. I have made sure to have as many different assets as possible. Even though I have got a lot of assets it is still quite hard to make every location feel as unique as possible.
Dynamic Environment
As I have already stated, the world is going to be dynamic. I played around with the idea in my previous devlog ( My new indie horror game devlog #4 ). What worried me was that it was going to be too resource intensive to be able to pull off. It luckily wasn't as much of a hassle that I thought it was going to be though.
The problem I am facing now is that all of the base locations in the game will have to get updated as well. This will make the game about two to three times as large. I already had a hard time creating some of the locations so this extra work will be quite the challenge.
The Monster
The first monster in the game was a free slenderman asset. This didn't look quite as good though. That is why I have decided to create something unique. The monster will also have to fit into the storyline of the game. I still have to come up with one, although I have got a pretty good idea of where I want the story to be heading. I won't disclose too much about that right now as it is still in a very early planning phase.
The reason that I am still going for a humanoid character is that the animations will be a lot easier. I don't know anything about animation or even how to create one in Unity. I also do not want to learn animation for the game as I would rather spend my time on the things that I love doing while creating the game.
Next Steps
Right now my job is just as the previous few dev logs. I will be working on the environment more. And I will be creating some mechanics for the monster NPC. I already create some mechanics for the monster that I have tested with the free slenderman asset that I found. I might remake these mechanics though as I made the game quite hard (and very scary). Luckily I still have a lot of fresh ideas that I am going to try out. Working on the monster more will also give me a nice break from working on the environment all of the time which is really sucking the fun out of the project.
